What aspects should be paid attention to in the installation and maintenance of turbine flowmeters?

2025 03/03

1. Installation precautions
① Installation location
a. Requirements for straight pipe section: To ensure measurement accuracy, there should be at least 10 times the diameter of the straight pipe section upstream of the flowmeter and at least 5 times the diameter of the straight pipe section downstream. If there are bends, valves, and other pipe fittings upstream, the length of the straight pipe section should be appropriately increased.
b. Avoid vibration sources: Keep away from vibration equipment such as pumps and compressors. If unavoidable, vibration reduction measures should be taken, such as installing vibration pads or using flexible connecting pipes.
c. Installation direction: Generally, horizontal installation is required, and in special cases, vertical or inclined installation can also be used, but it is necessary to ensure that the fluid is filled in the pipeline and the flow direction is consistent with the direction indicated by the flowmeter.
d. Easy to maintain: The installation location should be easy for personnel to operate and maintain, with sufficient space around for easy disassembly and maintenance.

② Pipeline connection
a. Sealing requirement: A sealing gasket should be used between the connecting pipeline and the flowmeter to ensure good sealing and prevent leakage.
b. Concentricity: The axis of the pipeline and flowmeter should be kept concentric, and the deviation should not exceed the specified value, otherwise it will affect the measurement accuracy.
c. Avoid stress: During installation, it is necessary to prevent pipeline stress from being transmitted to the flow meter. Flexible connections or compensators can be used on the pipeline.
③ Other precautions
a. Filter installation: A filter must be installed upstream of the flowmeter, and the filtration accuracy should be determined according to the fluid medium and flowmeter requirements, generally not less than 200 mesh, to prevent impurities from entering the flowmeter and damaging the impeller.
b. Exhaust device: For liquid measurement, an exhaust device should be installed upstream of the flowmeter to remove gas from the pipeline and avoid gas affecting measurement accuracy.
c. Electrical connection: Wiring should be carried out according to the instructions to ensure that the wiring is firm and correct. Shielded wires should be reliably grounded to prevent electromagnetic interference.

2. Maintenance precautions
① Daily maintenance
a. Appearance inspection: Regularly inspect the appearance of the flowmeter to check for leaks, damage, corrosion, and other issues. If there are any problems, they should be dealt with promptly.
b. Monitoring of operating parameters: Pay attention to the operating parameters of the flowmeter, such as flow rate, pressure, temperature, etc., to ensure that it operates within the normal range. If abnormal fluctuations are found, the cause should be promptly investigated.
c. Signal inspection: Check if the output signal of the flowmeter is normal, and if there are any issues such as signal interruption or interference, which can be detected using a signal tester.
② Regular maintenance
a. Cleaning: Regularly clean the flowmeter according to the cleanliness of the fluid medium, usually every 3-6 months. Be careful when disassembling during cleaning to avoid damaging the impeller and other components. Rinse with clean solvent or water, and then air dry for assembly.
b. Calibration: It is recommended to calibrate the flowmeter annually or periodically based on actual usage. It can be sent to a professional metrology institution for calibration to ensure measurement accuracy.
c. Component replacement: Check the wear of vulnerable components such as impellers and bearings. If there is obvious wear or damage, they should be replaced in a timely manner to ensure the performance of the flowmeter.
③ Special case handling
a. Fluid changes: When the measured fluid medium changes, such as viscosity, density, and other parameters, it may be necessary to recalibrate or adjust the parameters of the flowmeter.
b. Fault repair: If the flowmeter malfunctions, such as impeller jamming, abnormal signal, etc., it should be stopped for repair in a timely manner. The maintenance personnel need to have professional knowledge and skills and operate according to the maintenance manual.
